Open Source DeepNude App removed by GitHub

Open Source DeepNude App removed by GitHub and other platforms, the app uses AI to digitally undress pictures of women to create fake nudes.

Though the developers of the app have already shut down the project, there are other alternative apps showing up. GitHub has shut down the project and based on the DeepNude algorithm all the copies of the app and its repositories have been termed illegal and shut down.

GitHub deleted project which was “a work-in-progress open-source reimplementation of DeepNude based on reverse-engineering the original.”

DeepNude app violated the policy of GitHub which does not allow sexually obscene content on its platform. The platform after detecting the violation of its rules the original DeepNude app along with similar projects were banned.

A GitHub spokesperson while talking to internet media said – “We do not condone using GitHub for posting sexually obscene content and prohibit such conduct in our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines”

He further added – “We do not proactively monitor user-generated content, but we do actively investigate abuse reports. In this case, we disabled the project because we found it to be in violation of our acceptable use policy.”

The core algorithm of the DeepNude app was uploaded last week, citing the reverse engineering app was already on GitHub. The developer team in a note on its now deleted page said: “It no longer makes sense to hide the source code.”

They further justified their act wrote the open source can prove to be a useful source for developers and researchers working in other fields such as fashion, cinema, and visual effects.

There is mixed reaction all over the internet, but in general, the risk of abuse of DeepNude algorithm is far greater than its benefits.

It is not easy to make the DeepNude app disappear over the internet, but GitHub taking action against the app can be a positive step in eliminating the spread of this app. The treat of this app spreading is at large with similar apps cropping up which needs to be discouraged.
